Ukitopia Festival 2009 a huge success!

5D1 _MG_4244

The Ukitopia Festival on the weekend has left the Uki Community and the Ukitopia Arts Collective organising committee bathing in happiness and ecstatic at the success of the event.

The intention of the event was to celebrate all aspects of the Uki life arts and culture and with hundreds of the Uki and district people coming out and participating in all aspects of the vibrant program, the intention was very clearly realised. The event far surpassed volunteer event organiser Natascha Wernick’s expectations. “ I received so many thank you ‘ s over the weekend, I was overwhelmed by the end!” .

Although the committee had applied for various grants for the festival, none were received. This meant the festival had to rely on the Uki community to come forward and donated generously for this free event. And donate they did, with the festival breaking even. Many of the Uki businesses donated generously including  Happy High Herbs, Uki Real Estate,  The Mount Warning Hotel , Studio 9 , and the Uki General Store, Chemist and Bakery and Re’s Intrigues.

The event was also aimed at encouraging as many of Uki’s groups to get involved and as a result the Uki Public School jumped on board with the Eco Expo- highlighting the region’s sustainable businesses, the Uki Kids Club :OOSH providing a day full of carefully considered children’s activities, the Historical society with a historical display , the Rural Fire Brigade and the Uki Resident’s association.

Saturday afternoon’s music encouraged Uki‘s youth to come out and experience the glory of their peers with youth musicians Lacey, Right Left of Centre and James Higgins taking the stage.

The younger children who were not painting gourds and flags and making lanterns were kept entranced by Dudley and Falcon’s magic show and Rainbow Eagle Sparkle land, showing the children how to be caretakers of the land.

The opening ceremony on Saturday afternoon was a major highlight of the festival. Organizer Natascha Wernick sang out some of the many community’s wishes that had been woven into the wishing wall. Natascha was soon backed up by a stage full of the Uki’s most talented musicians including Deya Dova, Sue Mckenna and Loren who helped Natascha launch the communities’ wishes and open the festival. The crowd of about 300-400 were all on their feet singing the wishes out or dancing to the awesome beat.

Natascha then lead the rich pulsing crowd into the Images of Uki Arts exhibition in the Uki hall where the crowd were treated to an art exhibition from the Local Uki community, a huge and imaginative variety of works, many of which had sold by the end of the weekend.

The night was filled with people dancing under the stars to Mystic Beast, Imandan and PJ Pulse or experiencing an exquisite concert in the Anglican Church gig featuring four of this region’s top indie signer songwriters, Josie Forest, Andrea Soler, Richard Bell and Loren.

And that was just Saturday!

Sunday with the Buttery Bazaar markets the Eco Expo and the Art and Music the crowd doubled. The Pitts Family circus left the crowd in stitches and Deya Dova managed to get a huge crowd up dancing in the 31degree heat.

One of the highlights for the Sunday was the Elder’s tent. This space dedicated to the elders of our community both indigenous and non indigenous. They had microphones and held the space like an interview session with community members able to ask all kinds of questions, like” how did you make butter when you were young? ‘’.

Uncle Harry the indigenous Elder from the area and the non- indigenous Ida Daley marked the event as reconciliation. The first time members of the two tribes had come together.

Recover first and then do it all again next year!

Photos, audio and video of the event are all available. Keep up to date with other news for Ukitopia through: ukitopiaartscollective.wordpress.com , twitter , Facebook, or www.myspace.com/ukitopiaartscollective.

Martin Proctor displays his work at the images of Uki exhbition.

The Images of Uki Art exhibition is a major part of this year’s second annual Ukitopia Festival. The exhibition themed “Images of Uki” is a chance for artists of all styles to exhibit and sell their work.  25% of all sold work goes to Ukitopia Arts Collective a nonprofit association dedicated to supporting and promoting the creative industries in this region.

This year the exhibition has attracted over 40 artists and 100 works. Exhibition curator Kalia explained, “I am so impressed with the applications I have received so far.  It is going to be a very interesting and unique exhibition… a must see!”

Artists this year include Lisa Gair, Jenny Porter, Alan & Perri Wein and Martin Proctor. The exhibition opens at 5:45 pm Saturday 14th in the Uki Hall with food art donated by local food extraordinaires and quality wine.

What inspires Martin?  waves_fl

” Marty gains inspiration for his creative expression through journeying the vast and diverse landscape of Australia.
His creative offerings are teachings, stories of the land
who entices Marty to interpret it’s deeper, mystical influence in a visual language that may be better understood by human interpretation.

A common theme pervades the images that Marty transcribes. That is, a sense of playfulness and the invitation for us to grow ever more intimate with the living, breathing planet that supports and nurtures us.

The Perch Creek Jug Band are heading on down to The Ukitopia Festival.

The Perch Creek Family Jugband are heading on down the road playing, singing and dancing a style of music that harks back to a simpler time when it wasn't such a big deal for families to do stuff together and have a good time doing it. Full of surprises, the five siblings and a boyfriend get together to play everything from rollicking hillbilly tunes to gospel to jugband jazz on just about any instrument they can get their hands (or feet) on.

The Perch Creek Family Jugband are:

Camilla Hodgkins: Riviera keyboard, ($5 from the local dump) banjo, ukulele, melodica, toy piano and much much more. (definite over-achiever)

Lear Hodgkins: Drums, washboard, singing, jug and insightful teenage wit. (yeah, whatever)

Eileen Hodgkins: Singing, guitar, clarinet, ukulele and tap dancing. (no jokes may be made at Eileen's expense, as stipulated in her contract)

Crispy Hot Chickens (Aka Christi Hodgkins): Ever the bargainer, Crispy held on to his soul, and sold his leg to the devil in exchange for phenomenal talent on the harmonica, kazoo, trombone and musical saw.

Lenny Hodgkins: Spoons and vocals. (He sings one song and looks cute the rest of the time while stealing the limelight of the more talented and deserving members of the band.)

"Bigfoot" Jimmy Chandler: The tall man with the fabulous moustache. (As well as having a fantastic moustache, Jimmy also plucks the big bass fiddle)

Bill Jacobi Performing at the Ukitopia festival

Bill Jacobi  is someone who has been making a name for himself in the Australian music scene for quite some time.

Of late he is most often seen playing bass with Floyd Vincent and the Childbrides or fronting his own band Method, but over the years Bill has toured and recorded with a long list of artists including Goanna, Shane Howard, Neil Murray, The Warumpi Band and The Stiff Gins; to name but a few.

Music established itself early as a way of life for Bill and it has taken him all over Australia; to Ireland, London, New Zealand and Malaysia; and on numerous tours of the European Continent.

As a solo artist, Bill has entwined the role of singer/songwriter with a love for the acoustic guitar. Using open tunings and a combination of finger picking and bassline driven rhythm guitar Bill has developed a repertoire of engaging and insightful material that covers a wide range of musical territory. Originals that run the gamut from folk to funk, from hillbilly to hip hop and beyond. Being a lover of great songs, Bill’s interpretations of other artists’ work pepper his sets. Songs both classic and eclectic; from Bob Marley to Lucinda Williams, from Prince to Tom Waits and many points in between.

With the recent addition of lap slide guitar and foot percussion to his solo performances, Bill is proving himself to be captivating performer, moving effortlessly between soulful and intimate interpretations to foot stomping crowd pleasers.
